To: Yu Yuan (including first ticket)4.7/5
Yuyuan Garden, located in the northeastern part of Shanghai’s Yuyuan Tourism Commercial Zone, is adjacent to Shanghai City God Temple and Shanghai Yuyuan Tourism Mall. It is a renowned classical garden in the Jiangnan region and a famous historical site both domestically and internationally. In 1982, it was approved by the State Council as a “National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.”
Yuyuan Garden, established during the Jiajing and Wanli reigns of the Ming Dynasty, boasts a history spanning over 450 years. Its founder, Pan Yunduan, served as the Sichuan Provincial Administration Commissioner. To ensure his father’s peaceful retirement, Pan began cultivating the garden in 1559 (the Jiwei year of the Jiajing era). He gathered stones, dug ponds, built pavilions, and planted bamboo in his family’s vegetable fields. After more than two decades of dedicated efforts, he successfully created the renowned Yuyuan Garden.
The character “Yu” conveys the meanings of “peace” and “prosperity”. The name “Yuyuan” signifies “enjoying the company of elderly relatives”. Initially constructed, Yuyuan Garden covered an area of over 70 mu (approximately 4.67 hectares), meticulously designed by the renowned Ming Dynasty garden architect Zhang Nanyang, who also personally participated in its construction. The entire garden exhibits grand scale and exquisite scenery.
The present Yu Garden covers an area of 2 hectares, with staggered pavilions, rugged rocks, and lush trees. It is renowned for its serene beauty and delicate transparency, showcasing the artistic style of Jiangnan garden architecture from the Ming and Qing dynasties.
The Yu Garden still preserves the historical sites such as the “Cangshu Lou” (Library of Books), the birthplace of “Shanghai School of Painting and Calligraphy”, and the “Dianchuntang” (Spring Point Hall), the headquarters of the Shanghai Xiaodao Society Uprising. Throughout history, the Yu Garden has been praised by ancient scholars as “the most exquisite and beautiful in the southeast” and “the most renowned garden in the southeast”.
Yuyuan Garden, a rare cultural landmark in Shanghai, has been visited by numerous domestic and international dignitaries and celebrities.

hikumen, a distinctive Shanghai-style residential architecture, is predominantly found in the old lane houses of the city. These structures extensively incorporate elements from Jiangnan-style dwellings, featuring stone door frames and solid black lacquered wooden doors, hence their name. The majority of Shikumen in Shanghai are concentrated in Huangpu and Jing’an districts.
The Shikumen in Lane 96 of Shaoxing Road stands as one of Shanghai’s best-preserved traditional stone gate houses. It’s a favorite filming location for movies and TV series set in old Shanghai. The residents here have seen it all, so they don’t mind people carrying cameras around the alleyways—they even seem calm and composed, as if the cultural essence of Shaoxing Road has become part of their very being.

To: Wukang Road (free admission)4.7/5
Wukang Road is located in Xuhui District, Shanghai, originally named Fukaisen Road, named after the American missionary John Fukaisen. Wukang Road connects the bustling Huaihai Middle Road and the quiet Huashan Road from north to south, and is a “China Historical and Cultural Famous Street” with 37 historical buildings. Among them, 14 are excellent historical buildings, making it a truly “Famous People Road”.
Strolling along this century-old road, one encounters lush ancient trees lining both sides, with scattered European-style buildings dotting the roadside. The iconic Wukang Building, designed by the renowned Hungarian architect Laszlo Hudec, stands as a landmark of Wukang Road.
Its red brick walls, corner balconies, and triangular classical pediment windows exude a distinct Renaissance French charm. The building’s silhouette resembles a giant ship poised to set sail, explaining its former nickname “Normandy Apartments.” It once housed film artists like Wu Yin, Zheng Junli, and Zhao Dan, and is now home to Kong Er, daughter of the late politician Kong Xiangxi.
Wukang Road is renowned for its row of celebrity residences. No.113, the former home of Ba Jin, a literary giant, is a tranquil and cozy place where he lived for the longest time in Shanghai. No.393 is the former residence of Huang Xing, a British-style country house with a garden. At No.1, Lane 40, stands Tang Shaoyi’s Spanish-style detached garden residence, exuding a grand and retro ch.a..r.m…
Beyond the celebrity residences, the area boasts other distinctive old villas. The SAIC Motor Company office at No.390 features a Mediterranean-style house with red roofs and white walls, setting it apart from the other historic villas. No.99 is Zheng Guanghe’s historic residence, an independent villa with a pointed roof that appears precious and mysterious against the backdrop of white high walls and green branches. This is where the film’ Lust, Caution’ was filmed.
A full day might be needed to explore Wukang Road’s rich history and modern charm, with numerous cafes and restaurants along the way. At No.376, Wukang Ting is surrounded by three historic villas. Among the floral displays, the popular Coffee Tree restaurant serves a satisfying vegetable panini with a rich coffee. At No.378, Farine Café exudes a rustic French countryside vibe, where their croissants are hailed as’ Shanghai’s most delicious.’
To: Wukang Building (free admission)4.7/5
Wukang Building, located at 1842-1858 Huaihai Middle Road in Shanghai’s Xuhui District, was constructed in 1924 and has been home to prominent figures in cultural and performing arts. Covering 1,580 square meters with a total floor area of 9,275 square meters, this eight-story reinforced concrete structure stands over 30 meters tall, showcasing French Renaissance architectural style. Due to its limited space, the ground floor features a pedestrian arcade design with inward-sloping storefront windows to create pedestrian walkways. The exterior walls on the first and second floors use cement-clad stone-like finishes, resembling the building’s foundation. From the third to seventh floors, the facade transitions to yellow-brown brick cladding, while the eighth floor maintains its cement-stone appearance, creating three distinct sections. The third and eighth floors incorporate continuous long balconies as a three-tiered waistline, enhancing spatial hierarchy. To address natural lighting, the north-facing facade includes two large inward-facing courtyards.
